Hole 2 at 110′ is the shortest hole of the standard 9 hole layout, and is the second hole of the red [redhawk] layout. It plays from the tee, through the gap, over or under the leaning tree, L2R, to a pin that sits atop a hill to a very fast green, don’t go long on your drive. The leaning tree effectively splits the fairway vertically and horizontally, either take a left anny/forehand (RH) line left/under the tree, likely will end up left of the pin, or to the right/over to end up right of the pin, cut it close and you might have an ace run. The outside anny line, or a lhbh/rhfh hyzer left of the gap could work, it’s a little more open, but it’s a hard Left to Right. With a little luck the hyzer line (rhbh) could be an option, but with no real gap, will likely be knocked down by an early tree.

New players will soon realize what it is to putt on a fast green, don’t go past the basket or a tough return putt will be your answer, brush should stop roll aways and blow bys for a 20′ to 50′ comeback.

I went with an (rhbh) Anny with an beat Wizard over the top of the leaner, a rhfh or lhbh could be key on this one.

The second hole of the Gold Layout.

Hole B, 280′ plays from the tee pad of hole 1 to the basket of hole 2, along the entire length of the elevation feature.  From the tee hit the gap at about 50′ that is about 12′ wide down low 15′ higher (I might cut a couple dead branches out here to make a 20′ high line more playable, this is the line I take in the video).  The fairway continues to the right of the “guardians” of basket 1 (at about 90′, this gap is 20′ wide).  The fairway continues straight ahead past the bonfire (an eternally burning bonfire would be BA) about 100′, to another 20′ gap, the fairway finishes with a sharp right slightly downhill to the basket perched on the edge of the hill, a very fast green, blowbys are dangerous and brush should limit rollaways from going too far down the hill, but an unlucky roll could leave you with a 50′er.

The right edge of the entire fairway is downhill into some thick rough, a shot that turns over too much (or fades right) or gets a bad tree kick will require a tough recovery, far enough right there is a lane cut out for a zip line that could make for a good recovery lane.  A kick left or a big left skip could land you on the road OB, anything short of the road should have a look at an approach.  Any shot that lands in the fairway should have a look at an approach, you need to get to the bonfire to really have a look at the basket, careful you don’t blow past it.  It is parkable if you can hit a straight line 275′ with a fade right(LHBH or RHFH) with something stable for a gentle fade, or a big L2R skip could give you a scary ace run.

I went with a hyzer flip here, with a very beat DX teebird, flipped up a little past flat through the gap and gently faded over the leaning tree, leaving me with a scary 40′er for deuce, and yes I did deuce it on film the very first time I played it, I don’t expect this hole to produce very many of them.

Hole 1 is the first hole of the red [redhawk/beginner] loop. The hole plays from a tee in a small pocket surrounded by large Oaks. It plays mostly flat, with a handful of scattered trees. The basket is slightly elevated and guarded by a series of 4 trees. A gentle putter toss, miss the guardian trees either left or right and make your putt for two.

Hole A, at 260′ it is the first and shortest hole of the Gold layout.   The tee is from the parking lot, approximately 70′ to a window sitting on top of 10′ of elevation gain, 20′ wide by 10′ tall.  After hitting the window the fairway plays to the right before tailing back to the left to a slightly elevated pin guarded by a series of 4 trees.  A finesse hole, a gentle RHBH flex shot, if executed perfectly will park the basket, or a power shot over the top might get you there.

Just a few pictures from a return to the course where it all started on a rock climbing trip 3 years ago, 1040 courses played since then, I only remembered a few select things about the course – Horseshoe Canyon Ranch. After working our way across Arkansas, hitting a variety of great courses, our journey brought us through Russelville where we met up with some DGCR friends for a round at Old Post and one at Pleasant View. Then Jon followed us up to HCR for a round before it got dark, and we woke up to another nice morning round. Then we went through, NorthArk and Branson Cedars Treehouz.
